SURPRISE ALERT: Distractions can be a GOOD thing!!!
Do you get distracted throughout the day? Who doesn’t!?
It’s likely you’ve felt some guilt about this. But, did you know that distractions can be a good thing?
Most of us look at distractions as a negative but they can help to re-center, refocus, and realign you. Know your most productive and least productive parts of each day. For a healthy lifestyle, decluttering your head is essential to productivity, efficiency, and sustained energy.
Distractions can be used to actually increase your productivity and efficiency. When you need to change your state of mind, use a distraction as support. To help you focus on the task at hand and clear the fog, use a distraction to actually center your thinking.
Here’s how to make your distractions work for you:
Determine your most productive time:
When can you put your head down into your work, project, or priority? When is that time? This is when you dig in, when your strengths are solid and unwavering. In this productive time, the most important things must be accomplished.
Determine your least productive time: This is the time when it is most difficult to stay focused. Your mind wanders, maybe you feel fidgety, and there are frequent interruptions in your thinking and focusing.
Now, enter the distractions! Distractions fill what is depleted. Distractions supply the energy you need to re-energize and move forward. Distractions realign the brain, refocus the eyes, and reduce blood pressure.
A few GOOD examples are moving the body, time with a pet, listening to music, getting water or a nutritious snack, looking outside, and taking a short walk. If time permits, going to the gym or taking a class is excellent.
Allow time to change state. As your day progresses through the most and least productive times, use distractions to fill the gaps, to create a completely efficient and productive day.
Pull yourself back in line each day, throughout the day, with much-needed distractions.
